John Legend Talks About Kanye West’s Behavior

While many are quick to cast aspersions and judgments on the behavior of Kanye West, John Legend is not following suit when it comes to his friend.

Legend is on the cover of WSJ Magazine this month. In the November issue, in which he is interviewed, Legend says of Kanye: “A lot of people have tried to armchair-diagnose him, but I leave it to him and his doctor to discuss what’s going on in his brain.”

The ten-time Grammy winner adds: “Clearly I disagreed with some of the things he was saying, and I was worried that his saying it might empower some of the wrong forces, might be really demoralizing for people who looked up to him and thought of him as a leader.”

Would Legend ever run for President? It is something that has been brought up. “People ask me if I want to run for office, but I don’t,” Legend shared. “Maybe when I’m 60—who knows what the world is going to be then?—but I love my life now and what I get to do.”

John Legend doesn’t believe that social commentary is a responsibility of every performer—his biggest hits, in fact, have been his love songs, the strongest showcase for his buttery voice and classic writing style. “Every artist has to make a choice about what their story is, what they want to say,” he says. “Part of what makes a great artist is honesty on all sorts of levels—being honest about what’s going on in your mind and how you interact with other people, in love and friendships and family and all sorts of things. The best artists create beautiful work based on their truth, and my truth includes talking about what’s happening in the world right now.” Read the full #WSJInnovators profile online now, on newsstands Saturday.
